It is with a heavy heart that after having spent a great week at fanpu farm, we pack our bags to leave. Fanpu farm is a farm owned by a chinese couple, in the countryside outside of Chengdu. The farm is very busy with many simultaneous projects going on: aquaponics vegetable growing system, wood workshops, bakery station… During the weekends the farm becomes a playing/learning center for kids to learn more about eco-farming and sustainability.

During our week there we were put in charge of helping the progress of their latest new project: a life lab. Which is an outdoor garden/class room space for kids. We enjoyed taking part in a bit of DIY digging many holes, building fences, gates and a spiral garden. However I think the highlights for us were not so much the jobs we were doing but: one all the amazing food we ate with all vegetables coming straight from the farm and being able to use the bakery oven to bake some banana cake (we miss desserts!) and more importantly all the people we got to meet. Fanpu is great as it has a mix of both international and Chinese volunteers, giving us the chance to meet and make great friends with lots of new people. In our free time and evenings at the farm we got to learn popular betting chinese card games, chinese chess, go to the cinema, learn how to play snooker with local professionals and managed to convince the chinese volunteers to bring us to KTV (karaoke) which is quite the experience in China! It was really great - up until now we had been moving around quite a lot in China and found it hard to get to know people past simple encounters, so this was really an amazing week to just settle down and get a chance to meet many new and interesting people!
