We woke up early and had a breakfast consisting of toast with yak butter which according to our host would give us a lot of energy for the hike to come! After taking a bus to the closest town to the gorge we started our hike. The first two hours were pretty intense as its mostly just uphill walking! The views however were already starting to get pretty good and the further up we climbed the more excited we were getting! Around lunch time we found a nice guesthouse which served really good food which gave us energy for what was yet to come: the road of 28 bends - It basically just got a lot steeper and bendier for another two hours! The views were so worth it though, we were breathless, not just from the physical effort this had required but because the views were like nothing else we had ever seen! After all the effort getting up, the walk became a lot more relaxed and you could really take in all the beautiful views.
In the evening we arrived at a guesthouse which had an amazing terrace with a view, perfect for our well-deserved beers! The next morning, we were ready to set off again. The walk was very relaxing as it mostly consisted of walking downhill. Once we got to the middle of the gorge we continued all the way down right to the bottom of the gorge were you get to see up close the rapids and the beautiful scenery, this time from down below. Somehow as we were walking down it never really dawned on us that - what goes down must come back up – it turns out a short-cut for getting back up consisted of climbing one of the longest ladders we had ever seen resting on the side of a cliff, and which looked like it would never pass any kind of ‘safety regulations’ (who needs those anyways!). In all honesty we are both not really afraid of heights but once at the top of the said ladder we were shaking! Once our hike finished we were off to our next brief stop Shangri-la, we only stayed the night there as we had our bus to Sichuan first thing the next morning.
