After taking both a boat and a plane, here we are in Taipei, capital city of Taiwan. Taiwan is a small island of the coast of China. Although it is still officially part of China, Taiwan has its own currency, government and for your Chinese visas it counts as you leaving the country. As soon as we stepped into Taiwan we could already feel the difference between here and China – way less security, many more English speakers and an atmosphere much more in touch with ‘the west’. Our main reason for coming to Taipei was to visit Aurore (Agathe’s sister) who is studying Chinese in Taipei. Seeing this week as a vacation from a vacation, we just thought we would let aurore take the lead! We came very unprepared about what to expect in Taiwan and primarily excited about seeing Aurore and being able to leave our big bags in the one spot for a week and wash our massive loads of dirty clothes!

We stayed two days in Taipei were we enjoy walking around the very modern city, tasting some bubble tea (weird at first but weirdly addictive!) and experiencing the Taiwanese night markets. We then went to Hualien, a city on the coast and 3hour train ride away, to spend a few relaxing days walking around its famous national park: Taroko. The views and landscapes here are very lush and green, giving it a jungle like atmosphere! We really enjoyed kicking back for a few days and slowing down our pretty amazing but tiring pace back in China!

Back for our last night in Taipei we decided to indulge for the first time in some western food by going to an American diner and having an evening dinner consisting of burgers, pancakes and milkshakes before climbing one of Taipei’s famous view points and admiring the beautiful city by night.
