We finally arrive in Fenghuang! However, as we get down the bus, we realise that the bus station is not near the old city and we have, again, no idea of where we are. And that’s where miyu, the nicest women we’ve met so far in china, came to our rescue - she took the bus and walked with us all the way down to our hostel, which we would never have found otherwise! Once our bags stored in our bedroom, we felt so relieved! We had a lot of trouble to get here but it was so worth it! With its typical small Chinese houses, its shops, restaurants and street food everywhere, Fenghuang is exactly how anyone would picture china’s picturesque old villages. The river that crosses the old city adds a lot to the charm of the place! We’ve spent two days wandering around the streets and trying everything in sight! We had prawns grilled pancake, crabs on stick, rice shaped like sausages, fried fish, a soup of raw paste balls with poppy seeds inside (we didn’t really like this), caramelised nuts with dry fruits (a local speciality), bamboo rice, spicy chicken, sticky green tea paste and of course noodles and dumpling! We now leave Fenghuang a few kilos heavier then we came in, for Changsha airport where we will spend the night before catching an early flight to Xiamen.
