After 36 hours of train, bus and taxi we finally made it to Beijing! We have already both been to Beijing, so it was really nice not feeling the pressure to act like tourists but rather be able to stroll around and take in the small things! Our hostel, was in a Hutong neighbourhood, which is old quarters of Beijing that are sadly disappearing to leave space to skyscrapers. We loved walking around these areas and munching on street food, sampling their mini pommes d’amour, seeing the markets and checking out the different things going on. Beijing is a city, we both agreed, we could see ourselves live in. Food was of course one of our main focuses! To Agathe’s dismay, one of Megan’s food theories is if people are willing to queue, the stuff must be good! That’s how we found ourselves, on our first night in Beijing waiting alongside many other eager locals for an hour and a half for delicious hot pot (Chinese version of a fondue)!
The next day we met up with Megan’s cousin and visited the very hipster 798 art district. Being able to meet family and friends on the way is so nice and feels like having a little piece of home on our travels!
That evening we decided to go all out and have the famed Peking duck, the setting itself topped with a lovely waitress and incredibly scrumptious food, felt like such a treat.
Tired from all our pigging out we decided to have a quiet night in and somehow found ourselves being filmed for our hostel’s employee’s project, which then turned into us having baijiu (strong rice alcohol) and many beers singing French songs together!
After having our breakfast-must dumplings we set off to a village outside of Beijing to visit the great wall.
